THE COUNTRY
Romania, country of southeastern Europe. The national capital is Bucharest. Romania was occupied by Soviet troops in 1944 and became a satellite of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) in 1948. The country was under communist rule from 1948 until 1989, when the regime of Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu was overthrown. Free elections were held in 1990. In 2004 the country joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and in 2007 it became a member of the European Union (EU).
Romania's territory features splendid mountains, beautiful rolling hills, fertile plains and numerous rivers and lakes.
The Carpathian Mountains traverse the centre of the country bordered on both sides by foothills and finally the great plains of the outer rim. Fauna is one of the richest in Europe including bears, deer, lynx, chamois and wolves. The legendary Danube River ends its eight-country journey at the Black Sea, after forming one of the largest and most biodiverse wetlands in the world, the Danube Delta.
The Romanian landscape is approximately one-third mountainous and one-third forested, with the remainder made up of hills and plains. The climate is temperate and marked by four distinct seasons. Romania enjoys a considerable wealth of natural resources: fertile land for agriculture; pastures for livestock; forests that provide hard and soft woods; petroleum reserves; metals, including gold and silver in the Apuseni Mountains; numerous rivers that supply hydroelectricity; and a Black Seacoastline that is the site of both ports and resorts.
THE CITY OF BUCHAREST
The city is the economic, administrative, and cultural centre of Romania. It lies in the middle of the Romanian plain, on the banks of the Dâmbovița, a small northern tributary of the Danube.
Known as the 'Little Paris of the East' thanks to its palaces and beautiful 20th-century buildings, Bucharest is an elegant, imperial city with a passionate history for visitors to discover.

BUCHAREST AIRPORT INFORMATION
Henri Coandă International Airport, more commonly known as Otopeni Airport due to its location, was used as a military airbase in the Second World War. Over time it has been expanded and improved, leading it to be the most important airport in Romania.
How to Get to Bucharest city from the Airport
The airport is located (18 km) north of Bucharest. There are several different ways of getting to the city centre from the airport:
- Private Transfer Service
If you want an easy, stress-free way of getting to your hotel from the airport, all you need to do is book a private transfer. With this option, a driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals hall, and they'll take you directly to where you want to go. You can book this option for as little as € 33 (£ 27.39) a trip approx. - Bus
The cheapest way of getting to the city centre from the airport is by bus. You can take line 780 or 783 between 5:20 am and 11 pm. The buses leave every 15 to 30 minutes and the journey takes around 40 minutes (although it may take longer during rush hour or if there is a lot of traffic). - Train
Catching the train to the centre of Bucharest from the airport is possible, but it is the least recommendable option with regard to time, as the station isn't actually in the airport and you have to take a shuttle to get there.
